What exactly are soft skills?
Soft skills – are the glue that holds together any workplace. According to Oxford, soft skills are the personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people. Soft skills are non-technical skills that relate to how you work. These particular skills describe a person’s emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) as opposed to intelligence quotient (IQ).
The most common soft skills include Time management, Leadership qualities, Communication, Teamwork, Problem-solving, Critical thinking, Decision-making, Organizational, Stress management, Adaptability, Conflict management, Creativity, Resourcefulness, Persuasion, Openness to criticism, empathy, and delegation.
While it is nearly impossible that an individual has all these qualities, they are highly desirable in any workspace and also make our lives easier. Most interactions with other people require some level of soft skills.
We use soft skills every day at work and developing these soft skills will help you win more business and accelerate your career progression. By developing strong leadership, delegation, teamwork, and communication abilities, you can run projects more smoothly, deliver results that please everyone, and even positively influence your personal life by improving how you interact with others.
Skills such as active listening, collaboration, presenting ideas, and communicating with colleagues are all highly valued in the modern workplace. It’s become vital to develop these skills if you want to progress in your career as they will set you apart from others at the interview and on the job. Advances in technology have caused tasks that require hard skills to decline, making soft skills a key differentiator in the workplace.
Today everyone is in a race. Be it for landing your dream job or starting your venture. All career-related prospects and even our personal lives require fluency in soft skills. And it is up to us to identify the existing soft skills and nurture them and also develop new skills to remain at the top of the ladder.
